If you haven’t heard of skater dresses, they’re not quite what you’d think from the title. Skater dresses are A-line dresses, where they are narrow at the waist and flare out toward the bottom.

The BIG thing to know is that skater dresses stop mid thigh, whereas other dresses may have the A-line shape but go farther down the leg. A little matriarch-ish sometimes.

The term, “skater dress,” was actually inspired by figure skaters because of the shape of the bodysuit/dress they wear, but no worries, you don’t need to be a figure skater (or skater of any kind) to wear these amazing dresses!

I really love them because of how well they compliment a woman’s figure. They show off a narrow waist and flare out, giving off a shapely ”A” appearance (hence A-Line), so even if you’re not an hourglass body type, you can turn to a skater dress to at least give that impression.

Fake it until you make it, right?

Luckily for us, skater dresses can be dressed up to wear as a nicer outfit or dressed down for a cute casual look.

I wanted to give you 15 examples of really cute shoes you can wear with skater dresses!

1. Skater Dress With Open Toe Espadrille Wedges

Espadrille wedges are the perfect summer and spring shoeㄧespecially when they’re open toe.

They look amazing with shorts, skirts, rolled up jeans, and dresses of course! Espadrilles are fun to use because they come with a variety of straps and the rope at the bottom immediately gives it a specific bohemian almost vibe.

Check out my favorite espadrilles to wear this suspender shorts outfit!

2. Skater Dress With White Sneakers

I love white sneakers. I really do. I have a favorite pair of chunky Fila sneakers that I wear with the most. You can see them in this outfit here with a skirt. Isn’t this beautiful blue dress cute? I love the color. White sneakers really pop against the bold blue, and they’re definitely comfortable. This would be a great outfit for a day out walking a farmers market!

3. Skater Dress With Black Ankle Boots

Isn’t this a gorgeous fall or maybe even a winter outfit?

Black and red go really well together, so her black leather jacket that matches her black tights and black suede heeled booties look amazing with her red skater dress.

You don’t necessarily need to wear tights with a pair of ankle boots like these, but for cooler weather, it’s a great way to keep those legs warmㄧplus they’re a fun accessory.

This 2019 fall season is forecasting patterned tights to be in! Keep this outfit in mind!

4. Skater Dress With Heeled Mules

Isn’t this a pretty outfit? I recently did a post about off-the-shoulder tops. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to go check it out. This dainty floral dress pairs perfectly with these heeled mules.

Mules are great to wear with any outfit, you’ll see me wear mine throughout my OOTD posts, like these Gucci mules in this outfit, here.

5. Skater Dress with Pointed Toe Heels

These heels are a girl’s best friend because they work with so many different types of outfits and can be worn to a variety of occasions.

So of course, they look stellar with a skater dress, which by the way, this periwinkle dress with the keyholes at the side is super cute. Her light pink heels are a soft addition without being too bold or bright.

6. Skater Dress with Block Heeled Sandals

Block heel sandals or chunky heel sandals are great outfit additions, especially ones like these you see in this picture because they aren’t too high of a heel to be casually unwearable.

For example, you wouldn’t wear a pair of stilettos to go grocery shopping, but you could easily wear a pair of these block heel sandals.

7. Skater Dress With Leather Slides

These leather slides are super cute, especially for how simple they are. I like to wear shoes that aren’t very busy when my outfit deserves the attention, if that makes sense.

You’ll see me through my OOTD posts wear bold vibrant shoes to pull and match colors, but sometimes the outfit is so great that the shoes should be toned down.

8. Skater Dress With Over the Knee Boots

I know I showed a black and red outfit already, but goodness, this is too cute not to share.

The use of these over-the-knee boots with a skater dress is perfect. Wearing over-the-knee boots with shorter dresses or skirts is super fashionable, and one of my favorite ways to wear them.

You can see my red over-the-knee boots in this military jacket dress outfit!

9. Skater Dress With Keds

I really like how the white Keds sneakers pull white from the flowers on this yellow dressㄧsimilar to the first dress that has the chunkier sneakers.

Women’s Keds, lace up, and slip on Vans are much more feminine shoes in my opinion. The chunky sneakers are less dainty, so wearing these with a dress keeps a much more ladylike appearance.

10. Skater Dress with Suede Lace Up Caged Heels

These caged heels are super cute with jeans that have been rolled up, which is usually my go-to way to wear them.

After seeing how adorable this dress is, I will definitely start wearing a pair with my mini and skater dresses!

11. Skater dress with Rain Boots

I know this one may sound crazy, but hear me out.

There are certain areas in the US where rain boots are necessary because of the weather and there are regions in the US where rain boots are regularly seen as casual wear.

I think the idea of wearing something so casual with such a formal outfit is almost like… you shouldn’t do it, but you can’t resist. Know what I mean?

You’ve probably seen me talk about wearing rain boots in some of my other posts. I really want you to look deep into your soul and see these for more than just function!

12. Skater Dress with Cowboy Boots

Since I showed rain boots, I’ve got to show cowboy boots.

Another boot that is functional, but regionally regularly fashionable. Is this not the cutest outfit ever?

The cowboy boots instantly give you the sweet country girl look, especially with a white, cream, or even beige dress.

I have a girlfriend who married in cowboy boots, but she was a real life cowgirl. Despite her boots actually being real and dirty boots, they were an incredibly cute addition to her dress.

You can go a different route with cowboy boots, since they come in different styles. Wearing black ankle cut cowboy boots with a black skater dress would be less country and more city, if that’s what you’re into.

13. Skater Dress with Brown Ankle Booties

The ankle boots I showed you earlier with the tights beneath was a much more edgy city look.

This outfit here with brown ankle boots almost parallels the country vibe we just saw in the cowboy boots outfit above.

A fall version of it, though, because of the camel colored leather jacket, matching boots, and the scarf.

14. Skater Dress With Flats

Flats are truly one of the most versatile shoes. They’re perfect for work, they’re perfect to wear casually. You can even wear flats as formal wear.

So of course, you can wear them with skater dresses! I love that this outfit shows animal patterned flats with a plain white dress. It’s a pop of fun and color without being over the top!

15. Skater Dress With Grunge Boots

Saved the best for last! Kidding, they’re all the best; it’s hard to choose.

I have a special place in my heart for grunge boots, I love to wear my Doc Martens. Check out my Dr. Martens in this Yellow Romper outfit

This monochromatic outfit is awesome, and these boots are major statement pieces! I know grunge isn’t for everyone, but if you love it, this is definitely one to have accessible in your closet.

So. Now that we’ve looked at 15 different shoes that look great with skater dresses, let me say that basically any heels, boots, sneakers, sandals, flats, and flip flops will work!

I want to hear your thoughts. Which pair of shoes was your favorite with the skater dress? Do you have a shoe that wasn’t listed that you’d recommend? Tell me in the comments below!
